AN UPDATE FROM BOTTLEBEE
January 2026
Gold And Silver Jewellery Is Hallmarked At The Edinburgh Assay Office
A hallmark:
-
Consists of a series of marks applied to articles of the precious metals platinum, gold, palladium and silver
-
Means that the article has been independently tested
-
Guarantees that it conforms to all legal standards of purity (fineness)
A complete hallmark consists of three compulsory punch marks:
-
Sponsor's (or maker's, manufacturer's or name) mark
-
Metal and fineness (purity) mark
-
Assay Office mark
Bottlebee also add two optional marks as standard:
-
Date mark
-
Traditional fineness mark
Silver items weighing less than 7.78g and gold items weighing less than 1g do not legally require a hallmark, However items can be hallmarked at an additional charge - please add the hallmarking service to your order. Items requiring a hallmark will take at least 2 weeks longer to arrive with you.
Hallmarks are marked with the lowest precious metal. For example, if you purchase an item with both silver and gold in it, it will be hallmarked as silver. If you buy a silver and brass item, it will be hallmarked as silver + metal.
